The Story Behind Tina Fey's Scar

I wonder how Tina Fey feels about her husband telling Vanity Fair about her scar? It must have been agreed upon, right?

Tina Fey won't talk about the incident that left her cheek scarred, but her husband reveals the shocking story.
Jeff Richmond — who's the musical composer for his wife's show, 30 Rock — says that the scar that runs across Tina's cheek is the result of a violent cutting attack by a stranger when his wife was five.

"It was in, like, the front yard of her house," Jeff tells Vanity Fair for their January profile on the TV wonder woman, "and somebody who just came up, and she just thought somebody marked her with a pen."

He adds: "That scar was fascinating to me. This is somebody who, no matter what it was, has gone through something. And I think it really informs the way she thinks about her life. When you have that kind of thing happen to you, that makes you scared of certain things, that makes you frightened of different things, your comedy comes out in a different kind of way, and it also makes you feel for people."

Tina says talking about the attack would seem like exploiting it, saying, "It's really almost like I'm able to forget about it, until I was on-camera, and it became a thing of 'Oh, I guess we should use this side' or whatever. Everybody's got a better side."

Tina, who grew up in the suburbs of Philadelphia, graduated from the University of Virginia in 1992, and headed to the Windy City, where she met Jeff when they both worked with Chicago's famed Second City comedy troupe in the mid-1990s. They were married in Pennsylvania in June 2001.

If Tina really didn't want people knowing why, then I think her husband would have known that and wouldn't have said anything. I really don't think it was that big of a deal to begin with. Did people *really care* why she had the scar? I didn't.

Oh, I cared. Once I knew she wouldn't talk about it, I cared.
