AI's David Cook: He's A Good Copycat

Every week as I've been watching American Idol I've been blown away by David Cook (despite the heebie jeebies he STILL gives me). I really think tho, that it should be clear that he's not rearranging these songs on his own. He's copying them! It'll be interesting to see if he performs "Jolene" on tonight's show. The White Stripes covered that song and I can totally see him doing it. We'll see!

Chris Cornell wants everyone to know that he really liked David Cook's rendition of "Billie Jean" on "Idol" last week -- because he did it first!

In an interview on Billboard.com, Cornell admits Cook "sang it great," but adds, "it was literally a note-for-note take on what I came up with." Step off, wannabe!

While Ryan Seacrest did give Cornell credit for the innovative cover on the show, Cook's imitation has Chris singing all the way to the bank -- Cornell's "Billie Jean" has jumped to #12 on iTunes. Sing copycats, sing! (Source: TMZ.com)

I don't believe he claims to arrange his songs, and none of the other contestants appear to have the obligation to make their own original arrangements (nor do they credit who does), so I think he's being criticized a little unfairly for this. That being said, he hasn't gone out of his way to credit the arrangers either, and maybe he should. It's not an arranging contest, it's a singing competition (I can hear Simon saying this in my head now!). Ryan made me laugh last week with the Chris Cornell stuff.
